World Cancer Day is the one singular initiative under which the entire world can unite together in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. It takes place every year on 4 February.
This year, in celebration of World Cancer Day, experts advice individuals to attend regular checkups.
Many people believe they should see their doctor only when they are sick, or dying.
However that is not the case, many Doctors urge individuals to educate and empower themselves about their own health. It is important to seek medical advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle. And how to lower your risk of various conditions or diseases by maintaining a healthy diet, weight, and level of physical activity.
Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, according to the World Health Organization. An estimation of 9.6 million deaths, or one in six deaths, in 2018. Lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach and liver cancer are the most common types of cancer in men, while breast, colorectal, lung, cervical and thyroid cancer are the most common among women.
With the available data, it is estimated that in 2020, almost 110,000 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in South Africa, with more than 56,000 cancer-related deaths, representing a quarter of premature noncommunicable disease–related mortality.
Doctors are also requesting that patients get regular check-ups to help stay on top of their health. They are highlighting the importances of prevention, as a means to reduce the number of patients requiring medical treatment or surgery.
Regular check-ups can help find potential health issues before they become a problem. When you see your doctor regularly, they are able to detect health conditions or diseases early. “And the earlier the cancer is found, the much better chance of survival you may have.” Early detection gives you the best chance for getting the right treatment quickly, avoiding any complications. By getting the correct health services, screenings, and treatment you are taking important steps toward living a longer, healthier life.

Steak Sandwich With Super Greens

Ingredients
- 4 x 120g steaks
- 8 slices bread
- For The Sauce:
- 4 shallots, peeled and cut in half
- 2 handfuls curly kale pieces
- 1tbsp olive oil
- 150g crème fraiche
- 1tsp liquid beef stock
- 1tsp Dijon mustard
- For The Crunch:
- ¼ red cabbage, very finely sliced
- rocket leaves
- English mustard, to serve, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Place the shallots on one half of a roasting tray, the kale on another half. Drizzle over the olive oil and bake for 12-14mins. Remove the kale, and return the shallots until they are soft and caramelised – about 20mins. Remove and allow to cool.
- Heat a griddle pan and fry the steaks on medium heat for 2-3mins aside.
- Remove and allow the steak to rest whilst you make the sauce. Roughly chop the cooked shallots and mix them into the crème fraiche with the beef stock and mustard. Slice the steaks.
- To layer the sandwiches: top a piece of bread with the sauce, sliced cabbage, rocket, sliced steak and mustard if required.
Notes - Top Tip for making Steak Sandwich with Super Greens: Bavette steak is a great option for the more adventurous. Although it can be a little tougher than the well-known sirloin, it’s full of flavour. To make it a little easier to munch, slice thinly to serve.

Singer and songwriter, Beyoncé is making a comeback with a brand-new world tour that will begin in Europe. Beyoncé said through an Instagram post on February 1st that she is preparing for her Renaissance World Tour 2023.
Since the announcement, the beyhive has been excited and flooded social media with their plans to go watch the queen at whatever cost. This however didn’t go well with all members of the beyhive. The ShadeRoom recently shared screenshots of a conversation between a couple and it didn’t go well for the woman.

As per the conversation, the couple recently got engaged and were now saving towards a house and had agreed to not spend money on entertainment until they have reached their goal. However, the woman was willing to forego a valentines day and birthday gift in order for her to get the concert tickets. This however didn’t fly with her fiance as he was against the idea and did not agree to getting the tickets.
The woman proceeded to then ask for her contribution towards the house savings, saying she would pay it back. The fiance agreed to send her the money and proceeded to inform her that the engagement is off, saying, “I need a break.”

However, Rachel Jarrett from an Insights and Data Company called Zola says “Why are women and men who fight for equality in all other aspects of their lives clinging to a tradition that inherently does not put them on equal footing?”

- Some men are scared of females who have strong wheel power and sometimes think they can easily take their masculinity.

- If you as a female are the one who proposes, how will you address the issue of lobola for those who follow this marriage process.
However, according to relationship expert Cherisse Cooke, at Hello Magazine there are Psychological benefits to a lady proposing, having exaptation’s for a man to propose is hugely outdated, but it’s also compromising to women, and it would be both socially and psychologically beneficial for these imbalanced norms to shift.

According to Farzana Botha, Segment Solutions Manager at Sanlam Savings urges people to adopt the idea of frugal money during the month of February given that it is the shortest month in a year.
It is important to make a few small changes as it helps to sustain your finances and can therefore make a substantial difference in the long term.
“The Frugal February concept has been around for some time,” explains Farzana.
“The idea is to reign in your spending, entrench savvy financial habits and set your goals for the year ahead. Like a detox, but for your financial well-being.”
Top five tips on how to help you navigate Frugal February with ease and set yourself up for a financially confident future according to Farzana:
Find your budget leaks.
- Go through your bank statements to spot expenses that can be reduced or removed entirely.
- Ask yourself these questions: Are you spending too much on daily airtime or data purchases – would it be cheaper to buy larger bundles, less frequently?
- Consider pausing some subscriptions for the month or cancelling them altogether.
- Try freezing spending in one category for February, such as entertainment, take-out, or personal grooming.
Maximise your loyalty and rewards programmes
- The average South African belongs to more than 9 loyalty programmes. Check the programmes you belong to and spend the time figuring out how to take advantage of the benefits for everything from fuel to groceries, airtime and entertainment to cashback offers.
Be tax savvy.
- Maximise your tax-deductible contributions and get a larger tax refund. After all, who doesn’t like getting money back from SARS! If you haven’t already, consider opening a tax-free savings account (TFSA). You won’t pay tax on dividends or interest earned, and no capital gains tax is paid on the investment growth or when disinvesting. You can invest a maximum of R36 000 per year with a total lifetime contribution of R500 000, says Farzana.

Other ideas for Frugal February include:
- Comparing prices on your current contracts vs. other providers – can you get a better price elsewhere?
- Renegotiate the interest rate on your home loan or car repayments.
- Ask your friends for free or low-cost entertainment ideas in your area. This could include hiking or exploring a nearby beach.
- Consider biking or walking when you can.
- Postpone renewing your gym membership and use free online resources for a month.

LIFESTYLE NEWS - The golden oldie of daytime talk shows – Dr. Phil, hosted by psychologist-turned-TV star Dr. Phil McGraw, is ending after 21 seasons on screen.
After launching the talk show in September 2002, the program that was co-created by Oprah Winfrey will air new episodes until the current season ends, then McGraw will move on to other ventures.
The end of this era in daytime television marks the third major exit from the top syndicated ranks in as many years. Judge Judy was the longest top performing program and was signed off in 2021 after 25 seasons.
2022 also marked the end of the entertaining Ellen DeGeneres era, and now 2023 has seen the end of Dr. Phil.
Where is started
Dr. Phil McGraw debuted his TV career with appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show in the late 1990s before he transitioned to his own tough-talking show in 2002.
It was Dr. Phil McGraw’s decision to stop producing new episodes at the age of 72. This is what he had to say:
“I have been blessed with over 25 wonderful years in daytime television. With this show, we have helped thousands of guests and millions of viewers through everything from addiction and marriage to mental wellness and raising children.”
He continued:
“This has been an incredible chapter of my life and career, but while I’m moving on from daytime, there is so much more I wish to do. I am compelled to engage with a broader audience because I have grave concerns for the American family, and I am determined to help restore a clarity of purpose as well as our core values.”
Sources emphasised that McGraw made the call himself, to end production of the hourlong series that airs Monday to Friday.
McGraw has shifted into the role of producer for scripted primetime programming in recent years, and he hosts two podcasts. Despite steep declines across the board in linear TV, Dr. Phil is still averaging about 2 million viewers per episode. Which secures its spot as the highest-rated daytime talk show after Disney’s Live With Kelly and Ryan.
What’s Next for McGraw?
McGraw hinted at a new TV endeavour with the intention to announce a “strategic primetime partnership” that will be designed to allow him to “increase his impact on television and viewers.” McGraw is targeting an early 2024 launch although details remain sparse.
He says: “I am compelled to engage with a broader audience because I have grave concerns for the American family, and I am determined to help restore a clarity of purpose as well as our core values.”
McGraw thanks Oprah Winfrey for “changing his life” and has earned 31 Daytime Emmy nominations over its long run.
For Season 21, McGraw serves as executive producer along with Carla Pennington.

Miss South Africa 2020 Shudufhadzo Musida has achieved so much after her reign, from educating about mental health through her #MindfulMondays online series to her recent appointment by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as its new regional champion for East and Southern Africa and receiving the Glamour Women of the Year 2022 Game Changer in Mental Health award. She’s also a published children’s book author and one of the faces of the NIVEA Radiant & Beauty body care range that celebrates melanated skin.
In our first interview two years ago, she told me one of her biggest motivations for entering Miss South Africa was to get closer to her dream of working for the United Nations (UN) as an advocate for mental health , education and economic empowerment.

Knowing that wherever I am is exactly where I’m supposed to be is such an awesome thing to learn,” she says.
“Destiny delayed isn’t destiny denied; whatever is meant for you will happen. And when something’s not going your way or how you envisioned it, things will work out in such a way that you end up where you’re supposed to.”
This is one of three important life lessons she’s learned that’s changed her worldview for the better. “The second lesson is the importance of relationships , be it friendship, romance or acquaintance. We’re relational beings, so we can’t live alone.
“I’ve isolated myself for the longest time, and the people who held me down and lifted me were my friends and family. I’ve realised the importance of family, friends and good conversations. Feeling I’m not alone has benefitted my mental health.”
Another lesson is taking time to rest when you need. “Life can be like running on a hamster wheel. I was grieving losing someone very special to me, who inspired me to do what I do, and I buried myself in work. My therapist said, ‘Shudu, you need to rest.’ I didn’t realise how important that was until my body forced me to rest, and I couldn't do anything. Rest is vital and is a fundamental part of the formula for success. So, find pockets of it when you can.”
With over 600 000 followers on Instagram and as one of the most recognised personalities in the country, how does Shudu cope with online bullying she experiences? And how does she balance rest, work and family?
“I can't deny the impact social media has had on my life, but I’ve learned to detach from it and realised not everything has to be on social media. I prioritise my social media work, but when it comes to my personal life , I don’t show all of it because it has a way of engulfing your life.
“I’ll focus on online violence and cyberbullying in my UNFPA role as these harm mental health. As someone who’s experienced cyberbullying, I've had to learn to detach from social media, even though it’s a vital part of my work.
“Living in the present with those I love is more important to me because they keep me sane and grounded.”
Being on the cover of Glamour’s body and mind issue and part of the NIVEA Body campaign that celebrates women’s bodies and different shades of melanin is a big deal for Shudufhadzo, as her journey to loving her body hasn’t been easy.
“This partnership with NIVEA means a lot to me and feels like a full-circle moment because I've been using NIVEA all my life. And to partner with the brand on a campaign for embracing your skin resonates with me.
“Growing up, people would make me feel bad about the colour of my skin; the darker your skin, the more they made you feel like you weren’t good enough or pretty enough. “Over the years, I've become so comfortable with my melanin and skin tone that I love it. Getting here has been a long journey, especially concerning my confidence and beauty.
“This partnership with NIVEA speaks to the little Shudufhadzo who felt like her skin wasn’t good enough, but also the woman I am now, who loves being in her skin and feels confident in it. I’m blessed to align with brands such as the UNFPA, NIVEA and Glamour, who represent the woman I am now and what I stand for.”
You’d think self-confidence would come easily to someone who’s won a beauty pageant, but reaching this level of self-love was a process for Shudufhadzo. “My relationship with loving my skin has been interesting because I had a love-hate relationship with my skin in my teens. Now I’m older, I’ve fallen deeply in love with it.
“Being a Black woman and living in my skin is a privilege because this is the same skin that raised me and so many incredible women I know.

You can go to a spa for a full treatment that includes your manicure and pedicure, go to the beach with a picnic basket or go to a shopping spree for accessories.
There is one thing we seem to miss as ladies, is to find simple pleasure in the smallest things and enjoy the present moment that you’re in.

A Ugandan court has awarded a man R44 516 in a case he filed against his girlfriend for refusing to marry him.
Richard Tumwine said he fell in love with his ex fiancé in 2015 while teaching at a primary school in the western region of Kanungu, where his exfiancé was doing her teaching practice.
The heartbroken man said he wanted his fiancée to complete her studies before tying the knot which led to the ‘promise to marry’ agreement with her in 2018.
Richard revealed that when his ex fiancé enrolled for a law diploma at a Kampala college. She later asked him to pay all fees of R44 516, to which he agreed.
“I wanted her to complete her studies so that I can marry a well-educated wife that will not be dependent on me,” Richard was quoted.
The couple’s introductory marriage ceremony was set to take place in February of 2022, until the ex fiancé of Richard backed out on the marriage proposal, a law enforcement officer, opted out of the agreement, citing Richard’s age.
“When she disappointed me, I did not take the law in my hands because I knew the repercussions,” Richard said.
Richard revealed that he tried everything possible from the mediation process with his ex fiancé ’s grandfather, as well as “local leaders, the police, relatives and friends… but no positive result was attained.”
“I was advised by my friends to file a civil case in the Kanungu chief magistrate’s court which I did on July 1… and the case was registered as No.24 of 2022. I was happy when the court last week ruled in my favour,” Richard told the publication.
The court last week ordered the ex fiancé of Richard to refund him R44 516 Richard spent on her tuition, and an additional USh.1 million as general damages for inconveniences and psychological anguish.
He said he has since begun prayers for God to give him “a suitable and well-educated woman that I can marry.”
Richard also said the costs awarded to him will go towards sprucing up his house as he prepares for the next chapter of his life.

We use vegan butter, olive oil, and vegan chocolate to create a perfectly moist, bouncy cake topped with a decadent chocolate ganache.
This is an easy crowd-pleaser to tow with you to your vegan friend’s birthday celebration, or for a secret chocolate cake binge…we don’t judge.
Ingredients
- Vegan Chocolate cake
- 20 grams of vegan butter, melted, for the cake tin
- 3 Tbsp. cocoa powder, for the cake tin
- 6 cups flour
- 1 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tsp. salt
- 4 tsp. baking soda
- 4 cups brown sugar
- 4 cups boiling water
- 3 Tbsp. instant coffee granules
- 1 Tbsp. vanilla essence
- 20 ml white vinegar
- 330 ml olive oil
- Vegan chocolate ganache
- 100 grams of vegan dark chocolate, finely chopped
- 150 grams of tinned coconut cream
- Pinch salt
- To serve
- 80 grams of chocolate, for curls
- 150 grams of berries of choice
- Edible flowers
Instructions
For the vegan chocolate cake
- Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush a thin layer of melted butter inside a 26cm-diameter bundt tin and dust over the cocoa powder, tapping out any excess. Spray over a layer of non-stick spray.
- Sift the flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda in a bowl and whisk in the sugar.
- Combine the coffee and boiling water together in a separate bowl and mix until dissolved. Add vanilla, vinegar and oil and mix well to combine.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk to form a smooth batter.
- Pour the cake batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 1 hour and 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Allow cooling completely before turning the cake out of the pan.
Vegan chocolate ganache
- Place the chocolate in a heat-proof bowl.
- Heat the coconut cream in a small pot until steaming and pour over the chocolate. Allow to sit for a moment and stir to create a smooth, glossy ganache. Sprinkle in salt and stir to combine.
Chocolate curls
- Use a vegetable peeler or a small knife to carefully shave small chocolate curls from the smooth back of the chocolate slab.
To assemble
- Pour the ganache over the cooled cake and serve topped with chocolate curls, berries and flowers.
Pro Tip: Don’t have a bundt tin? Make an equally easy vegan chocolate cake using a large baking tray instead! Pour the warm ganache over the cake to create a shiny glaze, or allow the ganache to cool and spread over the cake like icing.

A cheerful husband celebrates his 13th anniversary of receiving a donated kidney from his courageous wife.
A man by the name of Eric Douglin was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease in 2004 and needed a kidney transplant. His wife, Mandi, stepped in without any hesitation.
Eric had undergone a successful operation in January 2010, and this year he gratefully commemorated his 13th anniversary of receiving the life-saving kidney from his “brave wife,” as he calls her, showing appreciation for his wife.
According to Kidney research UK Eric had sought out medication and therapies for many years to try and manage his condition. Until March 2008 where his consultant told him that he needed a life-saving transplant.
As a result of this transplant (Sclerosis of the kidney) Eric was advised the condition could be congenital and pass to his children, so none of his four children were able to become donors, the publication reported.
He told the publication that his wife had no hesitation saying:
He said: “When I asked Mandi why she wanted to donate her kidney to me, her response was: ‘Well, anyone would do it, wouldn’t they? I have two kidneys, you need one, so it’s an easy decision. Your children and grandchildren need you in their life, as do I.”
“The fact that Mandi is white, and I am black was more remarkable insofar that we were almost a perfect match, and to date there have been no complications or issues to speak of. Mandi and I were married in June 2011 at a very emotional service full of tears and smiles, attended by my very grateful and appreciative family,” Eric told the publication.
And now Eric uses his story to raise awareness of organ donation as a way of giving something back. He and his wife also became advocates for Kidney Research UK, speaking at events, promoting the need for organ donors, funding, and awareness of life post-transplant, Kidneyresearchuk reported.

The science has spoken: you do not need to exercise for hours on end in order to improve all aspects of your health, nor to boost your life expectancy. In fact, the secret to feeling fit, healthy and mentally buoyant actually lies in how consistently you move. Even the most die-hard fitness experts agree that getting your heart pumping, however you choose to do it, is the ticket to improving your health – and you don’t need to be committing to hour-long studio classes to do that. “The great part about exercise (particularly low-intensity exercise, such as walking, stair climbing, steady state cycling), is that it all counts and it’s also cumulative,” agrees trainer-to-the-stars Luke Worthington. “When it comes to low-intensity exercise, doing an hour in one go is really not much different to doing two lots of 20 minutes or 12 lots of five minutes. It’s as simple as making the decision to move purposefully each day. That includes taking the stairs instead of the lift, getting off the bus a stop earlier, or even walking around the supermarket instead of ordering online. It all counts!” So, how short is short? And how can those of us who are time-poor (or exercise-averse) reap the benefits? Below, some of the science to illustrate how exercise snacks of 10 minutes or less can make all the difference. The case for the micro workout Turns out even a four second burst of intense exercise could make us fitter. A small 2021 study saw a group of young, healthy individuals in their twenties cycle at maximum effort for four seconds, then rest for around 15 to 30 seconds, 30 times, thrice weekly – amounting to two minutes of intense exercise three times a week, or six minutes total per week. Findings showed improved cardio and anaerobic power (meaning they could generate more power with less oxygen), and while it’s important to note the participants were already young and fit, the research nonetheless suggests that even as little as two minutes of really intense HIIT exercise can pay dividends. Everyday movement counts A study published in December 2022 by Nature Medicine (which surveyed the fitness tracking records of over 25,000 people with an average age of 60, who didn’t regularly exercise), found that small bursts of movement throughout the day – be that two minutes of fast walking or quickly climbing the stairs – showed a 50 per cent decrease in death from cardiovascular problems and a further 40 per cent decrease in the risk of dying from cancer, compared to those who had no spurts of movement at all. Put simply, even the smallest amounts of exercise can increase our life expectancy – so next time you’re faced with the choice of “stairs or lift?” always choose the former. Try Tabata Have you heard of Tabata? A favourite in fitness circles, it’s a type of HIIT workout that takes just four minutes. The idea – the brainchild of Dr Tabata in 1996 – is to do 20 seconds of work at maximum effort, followed by 10 seconds of rest. Sample exercises might include squat jumps, push-ups, high knees or mountain climbers (or a mix, alternated). Hard work but over before you know it, studies have shown even four minute bursts can help lower the risk of premature death. Just walk “There is a large body of research correlating higher step count with reduced ‘all cause’ mortality,” says Worthington. “What this means is that higher step count is not only linked with reduced death from cardiovascular disease and obesity-related conditions, but other causes less directly associated with exercise too, such as cancer and even suicide.” He suggests aiming to walk between 7,500 and 11,000 steps each day to improve your health – and even if you don’t reach these numbers, 500 steps is better than none at all. “The great thing about step count is that it’s cumulative – not only across the day but the week, too,” he points out. Make it regular While you don’t have to toil over the dumbbells to make a difference to your health, all research points to the fact that consistency is key. Move a little each day and make a promise to yourself to prioritise it – there is always time for a quick walk. Still not convinced? Fans react to Imagine Dragon’s electrifying performance in Cape Town

There are similar questions being asked in silk and leather industries. It’s the most divisive material in fashion. Many have sworn they would rather go naked that wear it; but its animal-free alternative is not faring much better in the controversy stakes. Because faux fur is not immediately the good guy in this scenario. The same predicament can be rolled out to all manner of ethical fashion debates. While the production of silk sees silkworms killed, and real leather sees cattle and calves killed, man-made polyesters and PVCs are absolutely not the answer, and are in-fact immensely problematic in terms of sustainability. Which raises a real problem for shoppers, who discover that the ‘solution’ to questions raised within the ethical fashion space is often an enormously unsustainable one. While, of course, no animals have to meet-their-maker so you can have that pom-pom bobble hat, the environmental impact of faux fur almost matches that of fur’s, not to mention the often appalling and exploitative human conditions in which it can be produced. Aim to be an ethical shopper and you can often find yourself in a sort of cross section of caring; between the ethical issue of animal and human rights, and the sustainability issue of product that negatively impact the environment. So, is it really that much more conscious to go faux? First, let’s go through what it actually takes to make that faux-fur coat. More often than not, it is made from polyester, materials typically made from polymeric fibres, which contain acrylic. Great, you think, polyester didn’t come from a defenceless bunny rabbit or a mink, ravaged on a fur farm. True, but it is made from spun plastic, which can take up to approximately 1000 years to biodegrade once it comes to landfill. “Acrylic had the worst environmental impact of nine fibres studied in a 2014 report by the European Commission,” explains Mina Jugovic from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, “It came last in four out of six categories including impact on climate change, human health and resource depletion.” There is also the huge environmental impact of microfibres – these are the tiny plastic particles that synthetic fibres shed in the wash that can be extremely detrimental to the environment. Brands like Patagonia have been savvy enough to sell laundry bags that help trap these fibres in the wash, but they are one of precious few manufacturers taking action on this issue. “We now know these man-made fibres to be an absolute nightmare for the environment,” says Meg Pirie, a vegan stylist; “Not only are they made from non-renewable resources and often dyed with toxic chemicals, but these fibres will also take hundreds of years to biodegrade and are a massive cause of microfibres in our oceans and waterways.” Though she is staunchly anti-fur, she cautions against believing that all faux fur is the answer; highlighting that you still have to place vegan fashion in the bigger picture of sustainability. Huge steps have been made in high fashion away from fur - with Gucci, Versace, Burberry, Coach, Maison Margiela and Jean Paul Gaultier all having committed to banning fur in recent years. Yet, among fur-free high-fashion houses, Stella McCartney remains the only brand of this status to avoid animal skins completely. And whilst it may feel like fashion is turning its back on fur, the global fur industry was valued at a whopping $40 billion just a few year ago. Yet the fur industry is not just bad for cute and fluffy animals. It’s seriously bad for the planet, too. A study back in 2015 found that a mink coat has five times the environmental impact of a faux-fur coat,” says Yvonne Taylor, director of corporate projects at PETA, “In fact, the production of one kilogram of mink fur results in an emission factor of 110 kilograms of carbon dioxide. LIFESTYLE NEWS - I’m going to own up to something, in the hopes that this will reach someone out there who suffers from the same thing.
Health anxiety, formerly known as hypochondria, never used to be a part of my life. Despite always carrying an extra few kg, I was always healthy.
When I reached my latter 20s though, a silent devil crept up on my shoulder and started whispering the most heinous, self-sabotaging thoughts. And he hasn’t left since. Let’s talk about health anxiety.
What is health anxiety?
According to Mayo Clinic’s website, health anxiety (otherwise known as illness anxiety disorder or hypochondria) is defined as the following:
“Worrying excessively that you are or may become seriously ill. You may have no physical symptoms. Or you may believe that normal body sensations or minor symptoms are signs of severe illness, even though a thorough medical exam doesn’t reveal a serious medical condition.”
In my case, my health anxiety was sparked by a combination of things. Not being fit, being overweight, and having a rash I developed on my breast.
Of course, every woman would be alarmed by a rash on her breast, but even after seeing three doctors, and a specialist and receiving an ultrasound that came back clear and confirmed my problem as a case of eczema, my mind would not relent. I became irrationally worried and obsessed that I may have a rare form of cancer.
Ever since, every symptom, as tiny as it may be, like a pimple, a mosquito bite, a sore neck from sleeping funny or an upset tummy all converge at a crossline in my mind: it must be cancer.
When you develop health anxiety, you become obsessed with checking your body and Googling your symptoms. This turns into a habit and leads to stealing hours away from your day. You spend so much time worrying and self-diagnosing fatal diseases, life fades into the background.
Dr Timothy Scarella, an instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School says the following:
“People with health anxiety for the most part tend to fear severe illness, such as HIV, cancer, or dementia. They worry far less about strep throat, twisting their ankle, or getting a cold.”
Health anxiety is known to affect about 4-5% of the world’s population and can become debilitating if you don’t get it under wraps.
Signs of health anxiety You’re constantly concerned about your health, even when you’re leading a healthy lifestyle. You self-check obsessively, scoping your body for signs of illness. Lumps, bumps, rashes – you name it. You look for reassurance from others and frequently bring up your concerns in conversation with loved ones. You become paranoid that your doctor and medical tests must have missed something. You consume health information online and in the media. Anything you can get your hands on. You’re always Googling symptoms. You’re triggered by media or content displaying serious health issues. You miss out on opportunities because you’ve convinced yourself you’re ill.
All of this worrying causes your anxiety to spike, which then introduces new symptoms like headaches or a racing heartbeat, which only adds to your predicament.
How to deal with health anxiety According to Dr Scarella, frequent visits to the doctor for medical testing bring no reassurance for patients suffering from health anxiety. No amount of testing eases the worry, and it bounces back like a boomerang. It’s something you carry with you, that can only be addressed by doing the necessary work on your mind and body. The most important thing to remember is that you’re not alone, and what you’re feeling is treatable. There are mental health professionals trained to deal with health anxiety who will treat and prescribe meds to you accordingly. If you’re like me, and would rather go the natural route, there are ways to work around it. Here’s what has helped me Be mindful of your body’s communications with you One telltale trait of health anxiety is misinterpreting normal physical sensations as something more serious. Let’s say you had a workout the previous day and your arms are stiff. Health anxiety will have you believe that you must be suffering a heart attack or some sort of nerve disorder. Recognising your body’s normal response to activities and the environment will help you become more conscious of why you’re actually feeling the sensations you experience. The first step is to become more mindful. Cut down on obsessive habits This may take some practice, but you’ll get there. If you’re prone to Googling every sensation you feel multiple times a day, it’s a sign that you need to cut down, it has become a habit. More often than not, searching your symptoms on the internet will only lead you to dire conclusions. Be mindful of when you’ve got the urge to open up your browser and practice an affirmation in its place. Tell yourself that nothing will come out of Googling this, other than heightening your anxiety. The same goes for self-checking. There came a point where I checked the rash on my breast so obsessively, I injured myself. This exasperated the situation tenfold with new symptoms. If you’ve got a spot or a rash, don’t constantly check it, leave it alone! If it doesn’t clear up within a few days, then you have reason to visit your GP. Be mindful of and challenge harmful thoughts that loop What starts as a genuine health concern can develop into something bigger and more troubling, even after you’ve received reassurance from your doctor. If you’ve already been for medical check-ups and visited a professional, and they didn’t identify anything to worry about, work on eliminating the concern by being mindful of the thought every time it pops up. Once you know you’re in a loop, it’ll be easier for you to curb the anxiety that comes with the thought. Find support Health anxiety is frightening when you’re dealing with it on your own. I wouldn’t recommend finding a support group online, as this only made things worse for me. Reading about other people’s concerns and symptoms and how they struggle, made me more anxious. It may work differently for you, but physical support is my go-to. When I’m feeling anxious, I call up a loved one who knows I suffer from health anxiety, and they help talk me through some of the irrational fears I’m experiencing. Educate your loved ones about health anxiety, so they can learn how to best assist you.

3. Have you got a common goal?

 has dismissed concerns about casting her ex-husband, actor and director Neo Matsunyane, in the newly-released season two of Kings of Jo’Burg.
The Ferguson’s Films owner and executive producer appeared on the radio show Bongani Bingwa on 702, where she was asked about her ex-husband Shona Ferguson’s legacy.
She was also was questioned about the casting of Matsunyane in the show.
Bongani asked Ferguson: “A point of controversy, I mean, not for you, but for certain viewers that might raise an eyebrow or two … you’ve cast Neo Matsunyane in the second (season)?”
In response, Ferguson said she’s not the casting director.
“First of all, I’m not the casting director. Some decisions are made independently. With that said, Neo is a brilliant actor, he’s a brilliant performer and he suited the role perfectly, so why not cast Neo and why is there a point of controversy?” she said.

Real Housewives of Johannesburg star Christall Kay slammed allegations of her being in what was reported by many publicans as a “stressful financial position,” as a result of the ongoing issue with the sale of her house.
According to The South African news, which reported that Christall told the publication, that she is running low on funds and is therefore considering crowdfunding to continue paying for legal costs in the court battle of her mansion.
“This is not a joke. This case is draining my funds. It is just a thought, but I’m considering crowdfunding.
“The cost of paying for alternative accommodation as well as still having to pay for the bond costs, rates and levies on my own property have forced me into a stressful financial position. At the moment, the matters are worsened by not having a steady income and still supporting my nine-year-old son.
“The law definitely favours the illegal occupier as can be seen from my case. I am suffering severe financial losses while she doesn’t pay a cent to be in my house,” The South African reported and quoted Christall.
According to Zimoja, who reported that the singer was “broke and homeless,” did not go too well with the reality star as she slammed the report while speaking to Citizen. The publication reported that the Real Housewives of Johannesburg stated the allegations made by Zimoja were “fake news about my social status.” The publication further reported that the reality star would be taking legal action against the publication for “ Fake news.”
“They put a false headline in which is totally defamatory,” she told the Citizen news.

The radio and television star Penny Lebyane has denied allegations that she contributed over R80,000 to Thato “DJ Fresh” Sikwane’s legal costs for a 2020 defamation action.
Penny and Ntsiki Mazwai had to contribute less than R300,000 toward DJ Fresh’s legal fees, as DJ Fresh disclosed on the most recent episode of Podcast and Chill with MacG.
“They lost in court … Ntsiki finally paid up … she paid my legal fees. Penny paid my legal fees, ” said DJ Fresh. The former Metro FM host said that Ntsiki Mazwai paid R200 000 and Penny around R80 000 when asked how much the pair paid. Penny addressed the claim by denying ever paying “anyone anything” in a string of tweets saying:
I didn’t pay anyone anything. Not a cent. I don’t have money to waste. 1st l was not a responded in case. I filed to ask the court why my trading name Penny Lebyane is in paragraph 15 of an affidavit, which the response was it was a Mistake but l must pay for asking. I refused.

It’s back to school for millions of South African learners. But one of the biggest lessons they need to succeed in life – how to be smart with money – is taught at home, and the best time to start is right now.
In fact, the earlier you start talking to your children about money, the more likely they are to develop good money habits that will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives, says Stian de Witt, who is the executive head of financial planning at NMG Benefits.
Research shows that the sooner children start learning to manage money, the better off they are as adults. ACambridge University study suggests that by the age of 7, children can develop many of the basic financial behaviours they need in adult life.
“Building a strong financial foundation from a young age is critical. Even legendary investor Warren Buffett credits the early money lessons his parents taught him with setting him up for success. That’s why it’s so important that we help our kids build a healthy relationship with money from an early age,” said De Witt.
It’s never too early to start
Talking openly about money matters with your children will build their financial awareness. Include your children in conversations about your monthly budget, income and expenses from a young age. Show them how to prepare a budget. Get them to calculate the tip on a restaurant bill. Get them involved in choosing the best grocery items based on cost and quality. “These may seem like trivial tasks, but they all help make a child financially savvy from an early age,” said De Witt.
Teach your children to budget
Help your children set up a simple age-appropriate budget – maybe one third for spending, one third for saving and one third for giving, for example. Or open a savings account for them and deposit a portion of their pocket money into it every month. “When they start to see their money grow, they will start understanding the value of saving, compound interest and budgeting,” says De Witt.
Set a good example
It’s not enough to simply teach your children about money: their biggest influence is the way you discuss and handle money around them. “Children learn by watching you. It’s no use teaching them to budget the one day and then going on a shopping spree the next. You’ve got to show them what good financial habits look like,” says De Witt.
Help your children earn money
Don’t just give your kids pocket money without requiring them to do something for it. The sooner they learn how hard it is to earn money, the sooner they will learn to be financially independent. Get them to wash the car or mow the lawn. And if they only complete two out of three chores, only pay them two-thirds of their pocket money – and explain why you’re cutting their pocket money.
For older children, packing grocery bags or working as a teller or a waiter doesn’t just teach money lessons. It teaches how to take instructions, work with others and handle workplace stress.
“Educating your children about money takes time – but it will instil good habits that will serve them well for the rest of their lives,” said De Witt.

Seleka, had long life dreams of becoming a chef and now he is living his dreams as he discovers new flavors and learning from other professional chefs new cuisines.
As the host of The Cook Along he will venture across South Africa eating and replicating dishes prepared by celeb chefs using farm-fresh ingredients.
The show didn’t come overnight for the Skeem sam actor, he had to work just a little bit hard to be taken serious as a cook.

When he describes himself, he still puts “aspiring chef” next to his name as he believes that he still has a lot to learn and he’s up for the task, “A township kid with a passion for food goes on a quest to learn more about food. Turning my Skeem Saam storyline into a reality. This is the making of the aspiring chef SLK,” he wrote.
The show is about farm style cooking and the host Patrick, reciprocate the recipe with his own twist. You can now watch the cooking show on Netflix.

Former Miss SA Shudufhadzo Musida joins DKMS South Africa in the fight against blood cancer.
The beauty queen took to her Instagram timeline to announce the good news to her fans, of her joining in the fight against blood cancer with DKMS.
Deutsche Knochenmarkspenderdatei’, or German Bone Marrow Donor Centre, (DKMS) is an non-profit organisation, bone marrow donor center.
She caption the post saying:
“I’ve joined @dkms_africa in the fight against blood cancers and blood disorders in South Africa. I look forward to helping raise awareness of the urgent need of diversifying the global donor registry.”
“Life-threatening illnesses such as blood cancer affect entire families. The financial burden, impact on mental health, and access to medical care for diagnosed patients and their families are immeasurable. Through this partnership, I will work to add a voice, shine the light and ensure patients receive holistic support,” she wrote.

The organisation also took to their Instagram to announce the arrival of Shudufhadzo Musida to the DKMS South Africa family.
“The DKMS Africa Family is pleased to announce that @shudufhadzomusida (Miss South Africa 2020) has joined the fight against blood cancer! With our partners, we look forward to making strides in collectively raising awareness of the urgent need of diversifying the global donor registry and saving lives.”

The South African actress shares exiting news that she will be joining the CBS family.
On this acting role the actress will play the character of Queen Bhibhi kaSompisi Ntuli on King Shaka, who is the beautiful, opportunistic ‘Great Wife’ of Senzangakhona and mother to Shaka’s half-brother Sigujana.
Ben-Mazwai shared on her socials that Charles Babalola is to play King Shaka on the film and she got to play along side him when she auditioned for the role.
Sunday Times also reported “I am particularly excited about this production, not only because we are getting an opportunity to tell our own stories to the world, but the team behind it is a stellar one and SHOWTIME is pulling out all the ranks on this one. Charles Babalola who leads as Shaka is an impeccable storyteller.”
According to Zalebs, the film has been in production since September 2022 and is reported that the production will take place here in Mzansi.
This actress is known for her stellar performances on chic flic movies and series, like Happiness Ever After, acting along side Khanyi Mbau and Renate Stuurman, Savage Beauty, How to Ruin Christmas as well as many other movie roles that she has under her name.
Entertainment commentator Kgopolo Mpela, also reported that Nambitha holds a six time international credit for her leading roles on Netflix, making her the first South African actor to achieve this.
As good of an actor she is, the award winning actress holds a honors degree from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in Business Science.
