News Source Credibility: Track Publisher AI Policies

A news API team needs to know where its sources stand on AI. A simple first step is to document the rules each publisher discloses. Then review the evidence in each article separately.

On October 23, 2026, Civil Beat executive editor-in-chief Amy Pyle wrote a column about the newsroom’s first AI policy. Civil Beat’s policy permits background use of AI for transcription, but prohibits AI story writing. The policy is subject to change.

These publisher statements describe their processes and give useful context in a news source credibility review. They do not, however, speak to the veracity of a particular claim in a news article.

Create a Policy Register

In your application, create a policy register for each of your publishers and document the domain, policy URL, review date and summary of statements for each. Designate a person to own the record and establish a review date for the policy.

Distinguish between each process. Transcription and writing a story are two different processes.

If no policy is found, mark the status as “unknown.” Leave the question open until your team finds more information.

Review the Article Itself

Keep a separate list with the article source URL, publication date, attribution and evidence for each article.

When an AI agent drafts an answer, check if the reporting it retrieved supports those claims. A publisher’s AI policy will not resolve conflicts in reporting.

Evaluating trusted news sources has a broader starting point in Webz.io’s guide. Policy review can be part of that evaluation along with editorial accountability and review of the reporting.

Apply source choices

Reviewed source choices can be applied through Webz.io’s News Search API using source filters. Natural language queries can be combined with source filters for a more precise search.

Continue to apply the policy register in your application. This proposed workflow requires your team review the publisher’s statements.

Compare the results with a broad search to capture the restrictive source choice’s local reporting gaps and other perspectives. Document the gaps and revise the choice if necessary.

Retain records of review

Retain older records of review when publisher policies change. Note what changed and add the date your team reviewed the publisher’s policy.

Civil Beat’s statement that their policy may change is an indication to review these changes. Set an interval you find appropriate and review at that interval when a publisher changes their policy.

The goal is to obtain a publisher’s policy statement that is available for inspection by a 3rd party. That party should be able to see what the publisher stated, when the publisher’s policy was reviewed, and what evidence in the article justified the answer.
