Agentic Search for News: Review the Investigation Trail

An adequate news response should have an investigation behind it that can be reviewed. In the case of building agentic search, this means the searches that the agent chose along the way.

The Scheduler Is a Hidden Retriever, submitted to arXiv on October 19, 2026, studies the effect of delivery timing on search agents. It conducts experimental studies on when and how to deliver evidence to search agents. The studies were not done on production news services.

In the context of news applications, the main question is: would a different response order result in a different investigation?

Review a supplier comparison

Let’s consider an application that does a comparison of news about two suppliers. The application sends a search request for each supplier.

If it gives the first supplier another search right away, a slow response from the second supplier may affect the investigation. Make this choice explicit in the application design.

State when the comparison can be made. Define what happens on a request failure or timeout.

Account for limited follow-up searches

If there is a shared search budget of one, what supplier gets the last search?

A documented priority is a choice as well. Keep a record of which supplier got the last search and which did not.

This proposal makes the choice reviewable. There is no guarantee of the same answer on every run.

Check search history

You are allowed to retain a certain number of saved responses. Keep the content the same and change the order in which they are delivered during an offline test.

Keep the question, model settings and budget the same. Stick to the same order and note the variation that occurs during a normal run of the model.

Keep a record of the searches proposed, searches executed and the final citations. Review the paths of investigations and evaluate the quality of the answers separately.

During the test, ensure the publication dates of the articles do not change.

Connect the news evidence

Webz.io’s News Search API allows users to make natural-language queries and returns news article passages. The API provides a filter based on date, news source, country and language.

The filters restrict the scope of a supplier’s search. The application responds to and controls the follow-up actions.

Ensure that the test records are retained for the release review. Another developer should be able to see what evidence a given agent received and the searches it conducted next.
